Well, your method works for making a section larger, but how about making one smaller?

My King monster rotary bass has just that done on the second loop of the large tubing. One cuts a slit down the branch where the taper is to be reduced, overlaps the edges to form the new taper (removing any excess material) and hard-solders them back together.

I don't know who in the dim past did the work, but the result works very well and if you didn't know that it had been done (I discovered it when I pulled the horn apart for dent work), you'd never guess.
