As always I find the old US type of top action rotary valves very beautiful look. Why did they get obsolete? Was it the sideways tilting movement?:

Rick Denney has written on bell profiles. I have called the almost straight-sided bell from Cerveny and the likes the "Urtext" type. Found one more sample:
