Okay, that explains it. I call that the "dogleg", and have never counted it as a bow. I always though of a branch as being the bow and the straight section(s) attached to it. Isn't that what it says in the definitive Glossary of Tuba Terms to which we all refer but which doesn't exist?

My Holton has a leadpipe, the valve body, the tuning slide, the dogleg, an upper bow, a lower bow, another upper bow, another lower bow, the big upper bow, the bottom bow, and the bell stack. It seems that most front-action piston tubas may or may not have an extra loop of the outer branches. The York Master follows the same basic plan as the Holton.
