"...what do most of you think about the difference in SOUND between the German style rotary F's (B&S, Rudy Meinl, Mirafone, Alexander, Meinl Weston 45-S) and the American Style piston F's (Yamaha, Hirsbrunner, Willson, Meinl Weston 45-SLP/Z)?"

Yes.

To be more specific and to speak with more candor (ie. "provocative", I suppose), I believe that nearly all of us (including myself) are not far enough along in our pursuits to consider ourselves having arrived at the point that we can seriously discuss such minutia as "our personal choices of instruments as it relates to our sound production".

paraphrased from many years ago:

Qu: "Mr. Fletcher, why didn't you play an F tuba when you recorded the Vaughan Williams "Tuba Concerto"?

John Fletcher: " 'cause I ain't bloody-well got 'n F."

Finally, "Yamaha, Hirsbrunner, Willson, Meinl Weston 45-SLP/Z"... American???

There is almost no such thing as an "American" (nor an "American style") F tuba.
