Okay, here goes. There seems to be plenty of discussion re the difference between German style and American style F tubas in terms of response, particularly in the low register. However, I think we (big generalization) are failing to discuss the most significant difference: timbre. Variables (mouthpiece choice, breathing habits, etc) aside, what do most of you think about the difference in SOUND between the German style rotary F's (B&S, Rudy Meinl, Mirafone, Alexander, Meinl Weston 45-S) and the American Style piston F's (Yamaha, Hirsbrunner, Willson, Meinl Weston 45-SLP/Z)? In other words, does the sound that you achieve determine your choice of equipment? Shouldn't it? If so, why is there so much discussion about making the low register on an F more like the low register on a CC/BBb? Don't trumpet players strive for a different sound on their small horns than they achieve on their large horns? Shouldn't we?
