I chose the tuba on a dare. We were in line to sign up for instruments in 5th grade and snotty shannon sherman (in line behind me) said 'i bet you $5 you wont choose the tuba'. So i did. She still owes me $5.
As far as motivating my own students, i try to expose em to as much tuba stuff as possible. We saw the boston brass this year (very positive experience) and i gave them my Patrick Sheridan cds to listen to. My two tuba players are also best friends so that helps (i asked one to play tuba and the next day they both came in wanting to play). I also make reference to them and the importance of their part a lot during rehearsals. We tune to them as well. Make them feel that they are special and that the tuba is a special instrument (which of course it is).
