I got into the tuba after a year of trombone playing as a 6th grader. Although I've thought about it, I've never had any regrets about switching. It is a good instrument. Probably the best thing to do is use the shiniest tuba your school has and have the current tuba player(s) play something completely unexpected, melodic, and fascinating enough that it captures the attention of the children. Kids are attracted to big, shiny things, and the tuba is no exception. Just don't mention other instruments. The reason I switched was that I was beginning to feel forced about playing the trombone, because it wasn't my choice, but my music director's, and a big, shiny silver Jupiter 382 had just become available.(This was when I thought Jupiters were the best horns in the world, heh heh.)
