Just heard a wonderful recording of the Sibelius 2nd with Paul Paray with the Detroit Symphony that was recorded in 1958. Oscar LaGasse sound FABULOUS on this recording. I am not a great lover of Sibelius, but Paray doesn't let the music fall into it's usual turgidness. Oscar LaGasse sounds great, a big, fat sound that doesn't overpower, but puts a great bottom on the band. For those of you who think a tuba has to be the most prominent voice on a recording, search this one out and learn all about the beauty of ENSEMBLE. Bravo to the memory of both these great artists, and a great, often overlooked, orchestra.
