Oscar was trained as a cellist, and played in theatre orchestras and with the Orange Blossom Orchestra (later called the Casa Loma Orchestra). Theatre orchestras nothing to be sneezed at, they paid top dollar and didn't have a short season like symphony orchestras. I interviewed Oscar, as well as two of the trombonists he worked with, and one of his students, David Pack. Have written a memorial article which may appear in the Journal at some point. Oscar notwithstanding, there's something really special about those DSO/Paray Mercury Living Presence recordings. Oh, fun factoid, Oscar took a French tuba for combo jobs so that he didn't have to lug his big horns around. He'd be playing an Alex on that album.
