I've been giving this some thought lately. From my own vantage point I haven't found there to be anymore physical effort in slurring between different kinds of valves. I think the distinction lays in the sound of the transition between notes. From an aesthetic standpoint I love the wonderful precise "snap" transition between notes on a piston horn. Fast slurred passages can almost sound articulated with piston valves. I think that rotaries require much more precision to approach this sound concept. On the other hand, I prefer the feel of rotaries. On the other hand the fast valves I've ever played happened to be piston. On the other other hand, the horn I ultimately purchased was a rotary even though I could have gotten a piston version. So there you go.. as has already been stated.. you have to look at the complete package. Ultimately this debate is purely academic and rather silly to boot. ;b
cheers!
