I'm not certain that this is an appropriate use of Occam's Razor. You may be cutting off your nose in search of your face. In my *very* limited experience rotors tend to slow down as they get dirty. Pistons, on the other hand, due to the close tolerances involved.. can have a nasty tendency to stick at unexpected moments unless kept clean at all times. This isn't an argument for or against either type. If not properly maintained either type can perform poorly. I guess I just happen to disagree with your premise that more parts equals more failure.
For the record I don't spend near as much time pondering this topic as my current activity on this thread may appear to indicate.
