The King is a small 3/4 size horn. I believe it has 3 upright valves. The Conn 12J is a little bigger, but has 3 valves around the front. Both are good sturdy student horns, certainly nothing fancy. I just bought a King 1135 for my elementary school. It is the bell from the 1140 with the Conn 12J valve section put on it in place of the upright valve section. Again it is a decent student horn. Both King and Conn instruments are made by United Musical Instruments (UMI)in East Lake OH, which explains the combinatin of parts. I used to have a Conn 5J which is the four valved version of the 12J (I think I have the model numbers correct, but i am not 100% sure). That would be a nice alternative. as for prices I have no idea, are you looking for new or used? I believe I paid a little over $2000 for the the King 1135 last year without a case. ken k
