I believe we are simply splitting our hairs in different places. (another good argument against long distance embouchure diagnosis!) To me,'changing the tension across the lips' IS changing the embouchure! That is why, "...clearly there must be some change, or we would have less than an octave range." In my view,(I could easily be wrong, or misled) the embouchure includes not only the placement/attitude of the mouthpiece on the lips, but the disposition of all the required musculature, as well. So, in my model, changing the tension across the lips would be a nessesary variable in the embouchure.
A subtle distinction, I guess...
Back to where you draw the line, what about jaw vibratos?
