Matt,
as a guy who primarily plays Bass Trombone and doubles on Tuba (BBb) I have always articulated with the tongue starting either between the teeth, or at the gumline (on the upper row of teeth of course) or somewhere inbetween. It makes sense that the higher you play, i.e. trumpet, the higher up the tongue will have to be to start the note.

Also for what its worth, (this may be redundant advice but....) in terms of rebuilding (and maintaining) your chops, concentrate on the breathing thing and let your ears "tell" your embouchure, tongue etc. what to do. Things will fall back into place naturally with less "mind-aches" if you concentrate on, and go for the sound you want. Use a metronome, and work at the "basics"
