Boy, have you led a sheltered life! Organizations dedicated to promotion of an instrument are the rule, not the exception. As a direct parallel, our confreres who play string bass have the ISB (International Society of Bassists), perform solo works by the likes of Dragonetti, Bottesini and Koussevitzky, which are only rarely heard by the general public. Discussion on their list involves such topics as the outlandishly-sized Octobass and Great Bass isntruments (when was the last posting on BBBb subcontrabass tubas on this site?), bow mystique (just like our mouthpiece discussions). And so on...

And yet, like the tuba, the bass is a BACKGROUND instrument. So what? There are people who have a love affair with them and produce some wonderfully beautiful music. And contrary to your assumptions, they also have children, own pets and do charitable work.
