It varies. I was in a Tuba/Euphonium quartet last year and we had a conductor. This year two of my friends that play tuba were in the same ensemble and there was a conductor. If the group is well prepared it is not neccesary for a conductor. I hope that I've answered your question the best that I can. Good luck with that ensemble music.
