excellent advice! I too have and over-sized hard case to accommodate my gig bag and extra padding. Also, before I put the horn in the gig bag, I place a plastic trash bag in my bell into which I stuff some of my clothes for the trip. I can usually stuff the rest of the trip's clothes around the gig bag in the hard case to give it extra padding. The clothes in the bell act much the same way as the foam cones Hirsbrunners come with. They evenly dissipate any impact the horn encounters over a larger area. The other nice safety feature the clothes, gig bag and oversized case provide, is weight. It is hard for a disgruntled baggage handler to throw something that heavy. It also keeps you from traveling with perhaps 2 tubas, a garment bag AND a suitcase. However, I have had an experience when my tuba got lost for a week. Not only did I have to come up with a horn to play on this trip, but underware too.

lots-o-luck traveling,
