I had a similar problem with an old MW 25 which used the S-linkages. The noise came from wear in the pins, and not from the valves themselves. The bushing can be reamed and a new pin fitted, although this is not a job for everyone. Heavy lubrication in the pivots can minimise the play as long as it is renewed at frequent intervals. The valves on the MW were bullet-proof. I never took the rotors apart in 5 years and they were as smooth as silk.
