Richard, I heartily agree that Fletcher w/LSO-Previn is a great recording, but I picked up a version this past summer with Slatkin/Philharmonia that is stupendous!!! The comparison is close, the tuba is recorded very well with Slatkin/Philharmonia, and, IMHO, the intepretation is tauter and more focused. RCA Red Seal CD# 09026-61193-2. Worth the price(I got it used). Also, the best recording ever done of any piece, from an interpretation and recording standpoint, has to be Shostakovich 8 with the LSO/Previn from 1973. This is a ball breaker in every sense of the word. Pathos, furiousity, and heartbreaking emotion wrapped up with the best orchestral playing of the 20th Century. EMI Matrix 18 re-issue. Get it and tell me what you think.
