If you're going to buy a tuba (and I'm not saying that you should necessarily, just "if") get a used one, and probably not one on ebay. Most of the shops listed in this website have used tubas available at decent prices (Dillon music has one or two that might be worth looking at), and when you decide to sell it (for an upgrade or because he doesn't want to play it anymore) you should be able to get most, if not all of your money back.
