I agree - see the Santa Barbara area if you can. I spent a half-year at the university a few years ago and believe it's one of the most beautiful places in the U.S. Points of interest: the arboretum, the beach walk on Sunday morning (enormous arts and crafts show), and the whale watching. Solvang is perhaps an hour's drive - it's a town founded by Danish settlers about 100 years ago; it looks like a little Danish town, and the bakeries serve the best Danish pastries you'll find outside Denmark!
