I have played both horns a bit, the Meinl more than the 186, and on issues of sound I agree with the other comments. The MW is very dark, the horn is much heavier physically and will maintain it's composure under very loud playing. One of the main differences may not be of importance to your situation, but after a few weeks in the typical HS music program, the Mirafones are nearly junk while the MW cruises on, surviving to the end. I have found that MW valves survive with little maintenance.
