I didn't dodge the question. The truth is I am not judging the auditions. It is up to much more senior members of the band to decide, ie 15+ years in or so.

A high school kid auditioning for college and a professional musician audition for a job are not the same thing. I would bet that I could interview you on some of your previous auditions and find glaring errors in your preparation which I could go off on. What would that serve?

As far as someone showing up at an Army Band audition and not knowing the music beforehand. I would call that sight reading. We do ask for that.

Give the kid a break. He has probably had a fairly easy time of things in his world and has been able to take liberties with preparation and still do ok. If he hooks up with a good teacher in the right environment, then he will improve his auditioning skills.
