Been there done that. The simplest fix is to replace with the valve stems from a King 2341 BBb tuba. They are a slightly larger diameter stem with a much larger threaded area. And unlike the original Holton stems, you can find large finger buttons that fit the King stem. If you need even more length, Dillon Music has some finger buttons with a shoulder on the thread.
