I'm not crazy about the Homogenized sound of the orchestras of nowadays, but in general, the brass sound is better now then it was just 30 years ago. I don't agree about the "crass" sound you mentioned. To my ears the brass sound is darker, more focused and fuller today. I do like the old Chicago brass sound better than today's, but the other orchestras' brass sound more polished (cleaner) and fuller. Have you listened to old and new Chicago, Boston, or New York Philharmonic for woodwinds? Players like Harold Wright ( clarinet in Boston) or Stanley Drucker (clarinet in New York) or Joe Robinson (New York, oboe) are very highly looked up to. Compare their sound and playing to Vienna.
