Given that the horn's playability isn't impaired, the quick fix was to a make a little wire or string loop tied from slide's waterkey to the brace between the receiving tubes. Kinda like those loss-prevention devices they put on little kids coats & mittens. I've never droped the slide.

If the horn's a keeper, a decent repair guy could easily replace the main slide tubes with longer ones. It shouldn't cost much.

I would avoid the bits. If your slide is out 3 inches, you'd have to have 6 inches of bits. That would be real goofy, and likely compromise the playing quality.
