I recall Toby Hanks saying that there is no need for more than three hours of practice a day, if we use proper procedures. This was during his clinic at the Army Conference last year, and was specifically in reference to avoiding problems in later life with cumulative stress damage.

But, then, I've always believed that a typically pro characteristic was to have a period when one played many, many hours every day, for a period of time. The closest I came to this objective was the year the TubaMeisters played at a theme park. I have found that many of the bridges I crossed with that level of devotion have stayed crossed, even across later years of relative lack of practice.
