I visited Walter Sear's studio in New York in 1966 just to talk tubas and to try out whatever he had on hand. It happened that he had the small Cerveny CC tuba that Bill Bell had used in a publicity photo on the inside cover of one of his 1930's "daily routine" books. The tuba had just been overhauled and was in perfect condition; I really liked the way it played. Walter wanted $450 for it, which I did not have.
One week later an unexpected retroactive pay check arrived, in the amount of $500. I called Walter and learned that the horn was in a crate on its way to Alabama.
-Arrghh-
