When you meet him, smile and offer your hand for a handshake. Make conversation, ask him what horn he's playing - or how long he's played it and then compliment him or his horn or something along those lines. I'm not saying to be a fake, I'm just telling you to break the ice by treating him as you would like to be treated.

Treat him with respect right off the bat. You very well may have good info on the guy, but you don't know him personally, so treat him as you would anyone else. Gossip is poison, and all you are armed with to date is just that. Be nice (until he hits or bites you!)

If he proves to be a jerk, then stay the course. Treat him with respect and don't be threatening. Take for granted that he will take ALL solos and one only parts. If a part is divided, ask him what he wants to play. If you are better than him, so be it. This is a community band - this is his chance to be something. You'll have other chances elsewhere. He isn't going to leave, so there is no reason to make yourself miserable by trying to make him miserable. Just keep your chin up and be a class act. It should eventually pay off.
