There is another possibility, the man may be at the end of his tolerance for the sort of players who often show up for "all comers" community bands. I ran into this situation with a guy who had been an orchestra player of high skill level and standards, and who could not tolerate the "tuba Christmas" atmosphere. Of course he was probably expecting too much. The advice given by the more mature posters is right on, if you follow it you will perhaps overhear him calling you the "only decent player he has seen lately". NWD
