Finger length/playing trouble

Hey guys,

I've wondered for a long time why I would have so much trouble getting a timely response whenever I use a fourth valve on any horn. Well, I think I know now. It would seem I have a much shorter than normal little finger (either that, or my other fingers are too long).

What this means is that for my little finger to reach the fourth valve all the time, even when I curve my fingers, the other three are placed awkwardly. So apparently to use the fourth valve I'm having to move my hand each time to hit the valve, which makes combinations involving the fourth valve difficult.

Below is an approximate representation of the difference in my finger lengths. The distance between the tips of my ring and little fingers is more than double the distance from my ring or index to middle finger.

Needless to say, valve clusters are not designed for this. Does anyone have some (cheap--I'm a poor college student) suggestions on how to make an extension for the fourth valve?

Thanks,

Doug

PS Piston valves ;-)
