Longer (bass/contrabass) instruments and instruments with wild intonation are more difficult devices with which one may perceive effects.

The simple fact (assuming the same over mouthpiece length and shank taper o.d.) is that a shallower cup mouthpiece makes an instrument longer.

Anyone who has played a reasonably well in tune euphonium that barely played up to pitch with a 6-1/2AL (etc.) knows that the alternate use of a 51D will make the chore of playing up to pitch just a bit dicey.
