I think you'll find if you did a spectral analysis that Jacobs's sound actually has more of the overtones to go along with the fundamental. Those overtones are well-tuned, and they establish a clean difference tone on the fundamental. It provides a clearer impression of depth than a raw sine wave (i.e., no overtones) on the fundamental would.

It's part of what the orchestra guys call "color".
