On Friday the 5th of March, Donald Blakeslee, the long time solo tubaist with the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest of Amsterdam, passed away. His death was quite sudden as he had only recently been diagnosed with cancer some three weeks earlier. For those who did not know him, he was born in 1940 in New Haven Connecticut. His stuidies were at the Ohio State University, the Curtis School of Music, and Staatliche Hochschule für Musik, Berlin. In 1964, Blakeslee succeeded Roger Bobo as solo tuba. He performed with every major orchestra in the Netherlands and was the professor of tuba at the Amsterdam Conservatory of Music. Blakeslee had also recently announced his retirement plans for the end of this season. Services will be held this Friday in Amsterdam.
I do not know any more regarding where to send condolences at this time, but will post more as I know.
