This is sad news. I never met Don Blakeslee face to face, but I did have a phone conversation with him about 5 years ago when the SLSO was in Amsterdam. I became aware of his playing from the wonderful Bruckner and Mahler recordings of the Concertgebouw from the '60s and '70 conducted by Bernard Haitink. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to be a member of a great orchestra for nearly 40 years. It is so sad that he will not be able to enjoy a retirement with his family and friends. My condolences.
