The valves either route the air through the piston when not actuated, or turn it at 90 degrees to go straight out the bottom of the piston when actuated. One valve directs air into the valve tubing, and the other valve directs air from the valve tubing back into the main bugle. Both valves have to move together for the instrument to work, which is why each button is mechanically tied to two valves.
