Well, Yamaha has made a few custom instruments for Jim free of charge, including the most amzing 6/4 CC I've ever seen (it really is the perfect big tuba, I still can't believe I got to play it.) Though these are in no way the only instruments he uses, I'm not sure if he would have cashed out $27K for the big horn. I believe Sam Pilafian has a slightly less generous, but still advantageous situation with Meinl Weston.

These are, in fact, endorsments. Try not to think of the minimum for an endorsement being instruments plus money. These companies do not give these discounts because they are nice people; they do it because they believe that these people playing these horns will lead to other people buying horns from the same company.
