I agree with the ratings, but with a single caveat:

With Fedex, it depends on your relationship to them. If you're a business that's a standard customer of theirs and they spindle fold and mutilate your shipment, they usually settle up very quickly--they don't want to lose your business. If you're an over-the-counter customer, they don't really care about the relationship.

So if you ship Fedex, try to do it under the auspices of your employer.

And remember with all of these, that if you ship internationally and the package is handed off to a third party for delivery, reimbursement for damage or loss may well be impossible to obtain. All of these guys know the finger-pointing trick and will use it to their advantage.
