That's what I wrote in the previous. By that I didn't mean that early vintage recordings lacked convinction. It's all too many current recordings that lack conviction despite their surface perfections. And the early ones convey powerful views despite any apparent flaws in execution.

By the way, another case in point, the recent reissue on DG of the 1968 Steinberg/BSO Planets.(BTW it's Chester on euphonium and Sam Pilafian on tuba). At no time does this ever sound like an orchestra playing for mikes on a recording session. Since it's not "live" what's happening is the musicians must be playing to each other and to the conductor. They are cetainly making music in the best sense and taking a lot of chances. This is not the "standard" interpretation, but it makes most others sound stodgy in comparison.

Sorry I was misunderstood. And I will finish listening to the Fried Mahler.
