I've had a mustache for several years, and have never had a problem playing. I will trim it usually with a conair trimmer using the 2 or 3 attachment depending on my mood, but even when it gets longer it only gets annoying, and doesn't affect sound, etc..
I had a goutee for awhile about a year ago, got sick of it and shaved it ALL off. That screwed up my playing for a bit. I'm so used to having that top lip cushion :o)
My 'stache is coarse, but soft at the same time, so I don't know how different hair types might make a difference?
In my studio, facial hair is a regular thing! There's three goutees, and two mustaches. Doesn't bother anyone. One of my buddies in the studio wants me to grow a handlebar...now that might make things interesting!
