Have you ever seen those (mainland) Chinese copies of Conn 20K's? They weren't very common, required valve rebuilding from the get-go, but actually played VERY well (AFTER the valve rebuild). Another "funny" thing about these was that the cross braces had no socket flanges, were one-piece, and resembled East German tuba braces.

I picked up one of these "new" many years ago, fixed the valves, and sold it to a local school. The valve stems actually came out of the centers of the pistons, and the span (though not as comfy as Conn) was within the "do"able range.
