The offset is a necessary evil on short-stroke valves. Because the ports are ovalized, the pistons themselves are quite large, which would make it impossible for anyone but Andre the Giant to span all 4 valves with his hand. So the stems are offset so that they can be clustered closer together.

The amaxing thing to me is that you wouldn't think that offset valves would wear well and would always jam because of the off-center force. Nope--they work just fine.
