Short action valves have a pin on one side that is connected to the valve cap and which keeps the valve aligned. There is no valve guide in the casing. The pin holds the piston centered under tha valve cap. As a result the valve tends to stay centered better and there seems to be less wear than on the more typical piston valve. Logically having two alignment mechanisms, the valve stem and this alignment pin, keeps the piston better centered.

I'm not sure if I explained it well, but that is why I believe they don't wear, even with offset stems.
