Yes, and yes. I did admit the possible skew of my sample.

The last time I heard a 184 was a good brass quintet at a beer-tent gig. The trumpets were fine, the horn and trombone were clear. The tuba was non-existent. It's possible that all the sound went up and never made it to me.

On the other hand, a 186 is a wonderful beer-tent tuba, with no problem at all getting out there. So it's probably just that player.

I also heard a very famous educator play a solo in front of the band I was in at the time. He used a 184, and again his sound was buried by the band. Being a typical community band, most attributed it to the inability to play below mf. But that same band played a performance a year later with a much less well-known player on a 186, and even on the back row of the band I could hear every nuance. Given the quality and reputation of the first player, I'd have to attribute some of the effect to the instrument.
