I actually got a pile of those disk-drive bearings years ago from a customer of mine; beautiful things; fully sealed and serial-numbered. I found that they did very well as hub bearings on my mountain bike.

But heck, on rotary valves, I'd settle for a steel axle and replaceable oiltite sleeve bearings.

Pistons also seem to have their own design problems. A rotor doesn't touch the sides of its casing (or isn't supposed to), but a piston valve does. The closest to fixing this problem is the guide pin in the Conn short-stroke valves. Wonder why that innovation hasn't been adopted more generally?
