Interesting topic. I would highly suggest you get in contact with Roger Bobo. Speaking from a Los Angeles perspective, he was one of the biggest proponents for the F tuba for both orchestral and solo use. In fact, from what I understand, he was one of the only advocates out here, largely because the only F around was the practically unplayable Mirafone 180. Most people seemed reluctant to use an F, seeing it as a cop-out, and followed in the footsteps of people like Harvey Phillips and Tommy Johnson, who generally only used CC tubas (Tommy later used a double F/CC tuba in the late seventies, followed by a B&S F). Until the B&S tubas became popular in the early-mid 80's, there was very little use of the F tuba out here.

I am by no means an expert, and I hope someone will correct me if I am wrong with any of my previous statements.
