William Bell taught his students (that is those students who lasted long enough) to master the basics of the F tuba back in the late 40's and 50's. His favorite F was one made for him by the White company in approximately 1948. The influence that this great man had on his students was imponderable, and anyone who ever heard Don Butterfield play jazz on his F during those days had to wonder where this man got his inspiration. I think that the F's popularity in this country was probably a result of Bell's students influencing their students, etc. Harry Critchley
