You are right that there is a requirement of due process. Even in at-will-employment states, companies have to follow their own rules. I suspect that the university in question, like all good state agencies and nearly all private companies, has a disciplinary procedure that sharply limits those transgressions that result in unquestioned dismissal. The use of drugs on the job seems common in those policies, and committing illegal acts (such as trafficking in controlled substances). But I don't see either one of those here.

The problem for her is that it will follow her if she doesn't fight it.
