Interesting to see that you have arithmetically consigned the musicians in most community concert bands and community orchestras to "band class" because they play for love of doing it and don't get paid. Not for a moment do I suggest that those who get paid for playing don't love their music. Obviously, most of them do or they'd be doing something else.

I returned to playing after a very long absence because I missed it badly. It's a great source of relaxation and enjoyment for me and the 70 or so others who are in our local concert band. The director, who also conducts our local wind symphony, was a high school band director but is now an insurance agent whose "day job" gives him the means to do what he really enjoys, music.

His email carries this signature line: "Music is too important to be left to professionals."

Just a thought.
