Is this phenomenom centered on tubas? I've been to several performances in recent years where the audience now feels a standing ovation is compulsary. And I would say maybe 10-20% of the performances were worthy of such accolades. (if that)

Perhaps it is the psychology of the current audience and spectators to want to believe they were part of something significant, when in fact it was just a stisfactory performance. I only remember one performance, of a certain cello player 15 years ago, which was so exemplary that to not stand and cheer would have been rude. Most other performances seem to be just good, nothing more or less.
